Morning Mashup: Carter on the Market?

It’s not every day that a team can acquire a true number one centre with the ability to carry a franchise. Nevermind a guy who is only 26 years old and has recorded 115 goals in his last three seasons. When online reports trickled in from Comcast in Philadelphia and mentioned on Twitter that Jeff Carter may be on the open market, Leaf fans went abuzz about a potential swap. Regardless of whether the sources reporting the deal are legitimate, there is some reason to believe the Flyers are willing to move Carter.

With an overabundance of centers and a desire to free up cap space, the Flyers would be wise to move Carter before his no-trade clause kicks in and limits him from moving to certain teams. Although he will likely retire before his 11-year pact expires, Carter is entering his prime and has at least eight solid years left in his career.

The remaining cap space (between $6-7 million) that is freed up can be used to re-sign the likes of Ville Leino or towards a goaltending in free agency such as Ilya Bryzgalov of the Phoenix Coyotes.

Based on reports out of Philly, the Flyers are desperately seeking a fix. So, as Leaf fans, we all know that’s enough to dream big and conjure up unrealistic trade proposals. Only time will tell, but from the sounds of it, there is some level of realistic possibility to it.
