The Toronto Maple Leafs finally managed a win, as the Edmonton Oilers showed that the Leafs still have a lot to learn about being a truly bad team.

Toronto dominated the chances in the opening period, but weren’t rewarded. They did finally manage a break-through, midway through the second period, Panik getting a power-play goal. At that point, Toronto led the ES chances 9-4, and they kept up the pressure after that, Kessel and Rielly adding goals to give the Leafs a comfortable margin. Edmonton had the best of the chances in the third, but the game was out of reach by then.

We’ve seen a couple of games in this losing streak where the Leafs haven’t taken advantage of a strong start, and this one threatened to be another. They had the best of the first and ended up 10-5 ahead at ES Close, but this time, they actually managed to get the better of an even second period, scoring three times on seven chances.

The top two lines both put together solid offensive games, which has been extremely rare in 2015. The top trio got the most defensive zone starts on the team, and did well with them, generating a good number of chances, and all finishing positive at ES Close. Nazem Kadri’s strong performances continued, as he was +4 at ES Close, along with Mike Santorelli, with Daniel Winnik finishing at +3. Richard Panik and the fourth line had a strong defensive game, Panik not on for a single Oiler chance in 11 ES minutes. The lone line that wasn’t good was Lupul, Holland and Komarov, who produced no offensive chances at ES Close, and were out-chanced after falling behind, with Lupul finishing a team worst -5.

Stephane Robidas and Korbinian Holzer had the easiest zone starts on the defence, but didn’t do very well with them, as they were two of the only Leafs that were below even at ES Close, and Robidas ending up a team-low -4 at ES Overall. Morgan Rielly, who scored a spectacular solo goal, had a great game, ending up at a team-best +5 at ES Close. Cody Franson and Jake Gardiner had similar numbers, both finishing in the positive. Roman Polak had the hardest zone starts on the team, and ended up at +4 at ES Close. His numbers were worse after the Leafs took the lead, and he finished a -2 overall.
