Filip Forsberg scored three goals in a 20 minute stretch to open up a lead for Nashville.
While Toronto was able to fight back in the final period, scoring twice including one with the net empty, they ultimately fell short.
The Leafs dominated possession over the course of the game, but that was due to the fact they were chasing the lead for so long. Nashville had the better of the chances at even strength, but overall it was a very quiet game. As with the possession numbers, Toronto had excellent zone entry numbers, built up mostly in the last two periods.

Nashville had a strong start to the second period, with a 5-0 run in chances including Forsberg’s two goals that opened up that substantial lead. Toronto weren’t able to generate much at even strength in the third, failing to generate a single ES chance for in the last fifteen minutes.

Brendan Leipsic went onto the top line with Michael Grabner and Nazem Kadri, and while that line had good controlled entry numbers, they generated very little offense, with only one ES chance as a line. The offence came from the Mark Arcobello line, as he, Colin Greening and Michael Grabner all produced chances. Daniel Winnik’s line, which mostly matched up against Mike Fisher, and finished even.
The young guys who are now the experienced old hands on the Leaf blueline, Jake Gardiner and Morgan Rielly, both had solid nights, although they mostly played on separate pairings. Rielly was the best Leaf defender in terms of chance differential, while Gardiner, playing with Corrado, had the best offensive numbers from the backend. Stuart Percy and Viktor Loov mostly avoided the top Nashville lines, but still finished with poor numbers, with neither player on for a Leaf ES chance.
