The Toronto Maple Leafs have rounded out their 2016 NHL Draft selections with a second pick out of the Russian leagues (and the third selection of a Russian native overall) in 6’3 forward Nikolai Chebykin.

Turning 19 on August 1st, Chebykin is the fifth player drafted by the Maple Leafs who had been passed over at least once in the draft. Here is how he was ranked for the 2015 Draft:

  • Ranked #163 by ISS Hockey
  • Ranked #201 by Future Considerations
  • Ranked #50 by NHL Central Scouting (EU Skaters)

Chebykin played the 2015-16 season in the Russian junior league (MHL) with HK MVD Balashikha, putting up 35 points in 39 games to lead his team in scoring. That’s a big jump from just six points in 32 games in his first draft-eligible season the year previous.

Chebykin was a round two selection of Dynamo Moskva in the 2014 KHL Draft.
